MERSİN ON THE WAY TO BECOMING A WORLD HERITAGE SITE
In the cultural journey of human history, some settlements preserve their importance from past to present. These settlements, which exist in absolute and universally measurable time and infinite ‘now’, are immortal.
At the speed of light, which is constant in the universe, in the line between birth and death, cultures that have developed and changed on the values of nature, which is life itself, have survived to the present day.
Mersin, a cultural geography embracing the Taurus Mountains and the Mediterranean Sea, is one of these settlements. Mersin has always been an important center due to its geopolitical, strategic and natural values.
We have analyzed four values of Mersin, which are still mysterious today but which UNESCO has declared as temporary heritage. It would be more accurate to say four parts of a whole. Because this city is a whole with its natural and cultural values.
This geography is irrigated by the Taurus Mountains and fertile with the sun of the Mediterranean Sea. The most valuable of the four elements of nature are present in this geography: Pine and cedar forests that provide clean oxygen to the air, the mountain range that provides water to the city, the soil irrigated by the melting snow waters of this mountain range and the culture formed with the effect of all-natural values.
Years and centuries pass, cultures and cities change, but the value of this geography remains the same.
With this publication, Mersin has opened the door for its natural and cultural values to meet the world.
